Tucson International Mariachi Conference
April 26th, 2018Art, particularly in the forms of dance and music, is a fundamental medium used to express and explore the human condition. Both mediums can transcend language to tell a story. From April 25th-28th Tucson will host the city’s annual International Mariachi Conference where musicians and dancers from around the globe will gather at Casino Del Sol to compete and perform.
Mariachi music is particularly regional to the southwestern United States, and a staple in Tucson. What originated in the Mexican state of Jalisco as strolling folk orchestras can be found performing at numerous restaurants, weddings, parties and other special occasions around town. The Tucson International Mariachi Conference’s mission promotes awareness and fosters traditional values of Mariachi music and Baile Folklórico dance while supporting La Frontera, a free community mental health clinic.
Partnerships between groups such as Los Changuitos Feos, El Mariachi Cobre and Mariachi Vargas, along with many volunteers and organizations brought the Mariachi Conference to life in 1982. The melodies emitted from guitars, violins, and trumpets united businesses, individuals from middle and working classes of both Hispanic and Anglo communities, and local artists. Tucson native Linda Ronstadt became involved with the Conference in the late 80s, helping to incorporate Baile Folklórico into the program. Soon, in addition to providing funds to La Frontera, the Conference began to introduce educational programs at schools throughout Tucson and provide scholarships for participants.
With the 2018 theme of Juntos Tocamos Bailamos y Cantamos, the Tucson International Mariachi Conference will host their first Vocal Competition along with workshops for varying experience levels of Mariachi music and Baile Folklórico dance as well a Student Showcases. This year’s Espectacular Concert performers include Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez and Mariachi Angeles de Pepe Martinez Jr. featuring Marisa Ronstadt. The Festival Garibaldi, a signature event of the Conference modeled after Garibaldi Plaza in Mexico, is a full day of music, dance, art, culture and food.
